Daisy Jones/Carrie Soto 1

What makes this novel a "good" example of a contemporary young adult novel?  How does it represent contemporary literature of today?

Comments

  1. I wouldn't really call this book young adult because the content seems geared towards older readers. However, I do think the unique writing style makes this book contemporary despite the story taking place in the past. It represents contemporary literature today by thinking outside the box of traditional writing

  2. I wouldn't consider Daisy Jones and The Six to be a young adult novel. Throughout the book there is a lot of drug abuse and affairs, the characters are not teenagers they are adults. The book brings up subjects that teenagers shouldn't/don't have problems with. I think the book is very good but under the adult category not young adult.

  3. I can agree with what others have said in that this book doesn't really fit the usual themes of a young adult novel. Addiction, recovery, family, all of these generally cater to the latter side of the young adult-adult spectrum, i would say around 17/18-30 years old. However, many of the characters strive for a place to belong and feel needed. Billy finds this in his family and Daisy found this in The Six. The need for belonging is certainly something many young adults can relate to. While not explicitly young adult, this book is a wonderful example of contemporary literature, which a creative premise that is executed wonderfully. The characters all feel distinct and the story flows gracefully from year to year and tour to tour. The only real complaint i have is that the songs that are supposed to be massive hits don't really sound that great, although that may be a by-product of them being text-only with no audio associated with them.

  4. I don't necessarily think it's a good example of a young adult novel, but like I said in one of my other responses, it does have a few traits that are related to young adult. The book has a lot to do with addiction and heartbreak which are young adult subjects. I think the book is for an older group of young adults though not for high schoolers.

  5. This book is a good young adult book because it has a good meaning on how some people might be going through something like how Billy and Daisy struggled with their addictions. But, I do not think that this book fits super well into the young adult category becuase for most of the book they are older and do things that teenagers or young adults might not realte to. It is better for people that are in or around their 20s.

  6. I feel like Daisy being so young when the book started really helped the factor that it is a young adult book, but I think in some ways it does express that characteristic. What Daisy felt throughout the book is a good example of how some young adults can feel. Maybe not to the extent that she did but everyone has felt lonely, and I bet at least once most people know what its like to want someone or something they cant have. It also talked about mental health and mental exhaustion which is big in todays books.

    1. I agree with many people have experienced the feeling of being lonely. Which is a big part of the beginning of the book and that could be another chrematistic of young adults but really anyone can feel lonely at any point in their life.

  7. I don't think this book shows a whole lot that it is young adult but I do think some of the themes display it. I think the lessons in the book are something that young adults can use to help them succeed not only while they are young but also for the rest of their life. For example, the themes never give up, chase your dreams, and don't dwell on your mistakes can be important for all young adults, whether its in school, sports, or everyday life.

    1. I agree that this book is not an exact definition of a young adult novel, but it definitely teaches good lessons for all ages.

  8. I think in the beginning of the book where it shows Carrie growing up is the part that could make it a young adult novel. It shows her struggles in school and making friends growing up and I feel like it could be relatable to young adult people. That is only a small portion of the book that shows that though. For the rest of the book it follows Carrie as an adult with bigger conflicts that I feel like would not be considered young adult.

    1. Agreed. The only part I would consider "young adult" category would be the beginning of the book where she is in school and struggling with those relationships.

  9. I feel our generation does defiantly struggle with drug abuse, neglect, and such at a young age. I also feel that many kids could relate to their parents not caring like Daisy's did so with it being relatable like that it's pretty good but aside from that it's the past so it feels a bit older and more out of place of a book for young adult.

  10. I feel like our society today can struggle with. Such as, drug abuse, even being close to a person that is a drug addict and also some may feel neglected as a child. Yes, this happens to some in our society today, but the main characters are in this band, and I feel like they are too old to be considered young adults. They are more as if an adult. Daisy and the characters were sort of young for the first part of the novel but when the story keeps going, they are more of adults.

  11. I don't think I would consider this book a young adult novel. The characters are adults, and the conflicts in the story are often drug abuse, affairs, pregnancies, not much of anything a young adult would go through. While these issues are dealt with in todays world, they don't seem very young adult to me.

  12. I wouldn't consider this book a young adult book just because the characters were in their 20's or so. The characters have a lot of issues that not a lot of teens/young adults would have like drug addiction and pregnancies. That being said I do think that the book had a really powerful meanings like never give up, and hard work pays off. I think this was a good book but I wouldn't consider it a young adult literature book.

  13. I wouldn't consider this book as a young adult novel because the problems they all dealt with weren't really meant for teens. They were also all adults and dealing with these problems and i don't think that any teens would be able to relate to all of these problems. I really liked this book but i wouldn't consider it a young adult.

  14. i dont feel like it was because everything that happened would be considered like something 30 year old people would want to read. even tho it was a great book it wouldnt be here that long.

  15. i wouldn't count this book as a young adult book because the talk of family, drugs, and partying were for people older than teenage. The content of books is usually targeted towards certain people by covering what those people may be experiencing so this book was wrote for people who could relate to drugs, and partying not teens usually do.

  16. i would not necessarily call this a young adult book. some parts of this book like how the band all shared a love for music and their passion for it i would say could be classified as young adult. But i do not think young adults especially my age group struggle as much as someone like daisy did with addiction so with that factor i do not think this book can represent a young adult book.

  17. I do not think of this book as a young adult book because the characters were not teens but they were just a little older . The characters had many problems that not many teens/young adults would usually have like addiction or getting pregnant. I know that some young adults do but not the majority of teens do so I personally didn't really relate to the book. There for i don t really feel that I could it consider a young adult book.
