Scythe 4

What story elements (character, plot, mood, conflict, theme, etc.) are present in this book to make it "young adult"?  What intrigued you the most about this book?  What will you remember most about this book?

  1. As I saw it was the mood that made Scythe a young adult book. It showed how it can actually feel being in a dystopian world and how difficult it can be to help the problem in the dystopian world.

  2. I saw this book as a good young adult novel by the topics and events that took place. The topics/main idea of the book was that all forms of human death do not exist and the only way to die is by being gleaned as in murder, and to me that would be young adult, I see young adult as ages 14-20. Something that intrigued me about the book scythe was the main idea and the thought put into it. The part I will remember about this book is the ring that the scythes wear on their hand.

  3. A theme that makes Scythe a young adult book is death. Death is a heavy topic, so writing a book centered around the idea of death and morals is destined to be for older audiences. The book doesn't go into grave detail but is describes ways people died and it also covers how people feel about it. It described how scythes would wonder if their doing the right thing by gleaning people and battle with the thought of it even if they knew in the end they would still do it.

  4. This book was a good representation of a young adult novel because it had young adults. I think that if Rowan and Citra were older it wouldn't make sense. It also talked about death and how they all had to be gleaned to die. I feel like that makes it more of a young adult. The part i will remember most is that when they wanted immunity they would kiss the scythes ring.

  5. This is a good example of a young adult novel because the main characters that it follows are all young adults themselves. Risa, Conner, and Lev are all just normal kids who have gone through some things that most kids would not go through. They are troubled, alone, and scared and I feel like some young adult people today might be able to relate to some of the things they go through in this book. What intrigued me most about this book was how they could possibly believe that "unwinding" was the best possible solution for the problem they faced. How could they find it reasonable to let a human live a normal life not knowing if they will actually have a future for themselves or if it will be cut short by the choice of their parents. It is simply inhumane. To take a persons life to save another, or just because someone wants a different eye color? I find it disgusting.

  6. this is a pretty good representation of a young adult novel because their are teenagers learning something new and valuable about life and what they should or shouldn't do. I was intrigued most about this book by them gleaning people every day and some scythes thinking it was fun. I will remember all of the deaths that this book had.

  7. This book represented being a young adult novel because of the age of the charachters. Citra is a young adult along with Rowan. What intrigued me most about this book was the idea behind sycthes in general. Scythes i thought were an interesting idea and caught my attention. I will remember how disturbing the different deaths were and the fact that some scythes enjoyed gleaning because that was odd to me.

  8. I think the themes of challenging their moral compasses and the element of accepting a greater responsibility than they were used to make this book a great young adult read. What intrigued me about this book was the utopian setting and how often it made me grateful that I live in an imperfect world where art, music, and life in general has meaning. I think what I will remember the most is Scythe Faraday, his noble ideals, and how much he guided and impacted Citra and Rowan in a positive way.

  9. The topic technically at discussion in Unwind is bodily autonomy (discussed through unwinding), which is a roundabout way of discussing abortion, an issue which directly impacts and involves many young adults. The mood is usually tense with brief moments of respite from the hostile world around the characters, and the conflict and resolution of the main characters surviving against all odds fits well into the young adult genre. The thing that intrigued me most is that unwinding most closely represented organ harvesting, yet the book stated that those who underwent the procedure remained alive, and so i was interested to see how exactly that worked. I will remember the ending quite fondly, the three characters are left in a unique position of freedom and power after the main conflict resolves, two things which they have gone the whole book being deprived of, and it shows how well the characters utilized their position to help others.

  10. I think that Citra and Rowan make this book a good element for young adult literature, because they are in the age range. I also think that the way some of the sythes felt about having to glean or kill other humans is also a big factor in making this book to make it young adult. Volta for example, he gleaned himself because he could not handle all of the feelings with being a sythe.

    1. That is a very good point!! I didnt think about how Volta gleaned himself to be an element of young adult but that really makes sense.

  11. I think what makes this book young adult is the characters, because the two main characters it's based around are pretty young. The book also talks a lot about the new-order scythes, and those scythes are also quite young being influenced by bad older scythes. One thing about the book I won't forget is what Scythe Goddard and Scythe Rand did to Tyger, I was very disgusted when i found out what happened.

  12. I feel like the main characters being teenagers really helps it to be a young adult book. The plot of the story doesn't totally make it feel that way because its all about learning to kill, but it has some characteristics. Rowan and Citra kind of falling for each other but not being able to be together has some part of making it feel young adult. What intrigued me most was seeing who was going to get chosen to be the scythe Citra or Rowan. I will probably remember Rowan killing Goddard the most just because I didnt expect it.

  13. What makes the book young adults is the characters being teenagers. What I will remember about this book the most is probably what Scythe Goddard and Scythe Rand did to Tyger it was a very big surprise. This book was very good over all

  14. I believe that this book was a good example of young adult because the characters age and they book was revolved around death. Death can happen to anyone at any point to the people in their community. In this circumstance it is a bit different, but characters are still losing people around them. The thing I will most remember about the book is the character faraday, because he had such an impact on Citra and how she handled herself through everything.

  15. I think the theme of the book was a perfect world because the Thunderhead tried to make the world get rid of sicknesses and stuff but the only way you could die was a Scythe. I also think that the plot was such a good to. I loved that the second book picked up right after the first book and that we got to see how the ending was. I think that all the conflicts were really good to and that each one was really important to the story and how it played out. The book was really interesting and I loved all of elements of the story!

  16. Although I think the first book in scythe is a good representation of young adult I can't agree with the third one. By the third book Rowan, Citra, and Greyson are mostly grown up. They are now in their early twenties and they have too take on a lot more responsibilities then young adult do today. With the Scythdom collapsing and Goddard taking over they are faced with many conflicts, like saving the world, that many people can't relate too. So although I really enjoyed this book and I think other young adults would too, I don't think it really represents young adult literature. What intrigued me the most about this book is how there were so many different stories in it because all the main characters were living different lives and all those stories formed together at the end to build a suspenseful and compelling ending to the series. I will always remember the ending of this book and how much I enjoyed this whole series.

  17. I feel like the book is young adult because of some of the issues they face. while the book is placed in the future, some of the problems can still relate, for example the slight romance between citra and rowan.

  18. It's more young adult due to the ages and some kinda similar problems faced that young adults often face. I mean we're not in some dystopian world or anything but it shows that some problems are just common things everyone struggles with. I really enjoyed the book and it was good just not my type of read and I probably won't finish the series or anything but it was definitely written well and I loved the world building.
