Silent Patient 1

What makes this novel a "good" example of a contemporary young adult novel?  How does it represent contemporary literature of today?

  1. The Silent Patient is a great young adult literature because it talks about mental illnesses and how that can affect you later in life. Alicia who was one of the characters referenced a lot of when she was a teen/child in her diary that she wrote in every day. I think that mental health was a very big part of this book and mental health has became a bigger issue now then in the past. I feel that you should talk about your trauma right away so you don't tuck it all away until you are older. Alicia sadly had to many emotions and didn't know how to get help, so that is why I think that Alicia killed Gabriel.

    1. I think her childhood trama's definitely had a big role in Alicia killing Gabriel, him saying he didnt want to die like pushed her over the edge, just because it brought back feelings from when he father had wished she was the one that shouldve died. Im not sure if that was the only thing that had to do with it though. I know wwhen Theo left their house he said how Gabriel was sleeping with his wife, did Alicia process any of that before she killed Garbriel. I feel like that part just went untold in the book.

  2. I think it is a good book to portray the feelings that people have with depression and when they feel they cant have anyone to talk to. this was a very mature and deep feeling book. It kept me on edge the whole time and also kept me intrigued. i think that everyone needs a person to talk to about how they are doing or even just about their feelings. Otherwise trauma can really effect your actions later in life alike to how Alicia killed Gabriel.

  3. This book is very relevant with the problems in today's world. Lot's of people struggle with mental health problems, and this book shows how therapy works and what it does for people. A good piece of young adult literature should have topics that people can somewhat relate to or learn from, and this book has exactly that. Young adult literature should also be able to keep a reader engaged, rather than drag the story on longer than needed. This book had multiple twists and turns, and multiple different pieces, connected in some way, which kept me entertained and intriguied.

    1. I agree that many people in today's society struggle with problems that Alicia had struggled with. She had lost her mom at a young age her father had emotionally abused her; he also was an addict. Then on top of that her husband was killed.

  4. This book is a very good young adult literature book. It shows a lot about problems we have in this world today. Many people struggle with mental health and go to therapy. You also see just how much therapy works for some people and don't for others. You can also see how much childhood trauma can really affect a person. Alicia had many problems in her childhood and instead of getting help she let that get the best of her by killing Gabriel.

  5. I feel like the book is a really good young adult literature book because it has to do with two broken relationships, childhood trauma and even a bit of trauma that originated later on in their lives, it has a lot of mystery, people have to go through the death of those they're close to, they get let down and let each other down repeatedly. It's a good escape from reality where you can focus on other people with probably more or worse issues to make you reminded of what you do have contrast to the bad.

  6. I feel this book can be put under the category of young adult literature because of all the thing people can relate to. Relationships are involved, abuse from their childhood, mental health, death, trauma. Alicia has gone through a lot in her life and was finally having a normalcy until this man comes and kills Gaberiel. I believe this is a good example of young adult.

  7. I don't know if I would put it in a contemporary young adult lit category because its not very relatable. The only thing i would say would be the mental health part of it but then again not everyone is murdering their husbands and being put into mental hospitals.

  8. This book could possibly be put under the category of contemporary young adult literature but also it possibly could not. I think this book could be considered a young adult novel because of the mental health issues. In the book Alicia struggles with a lot of different mental health things but not ones that most teens or young adults go through. A lot of teens do not murder people like Alicia did but a lot of teens do struggle with different mental things. Along with that the characters in the book were all not really young adults, so the ages do not fit the category.

  9. I think this book is a good example of a contemporary young adult novel because it talks about mental health and cheating in relationships and childhood. Which are all aspects I feel play a big role in young adults lives, so they are able to almost relate to what the chcaracters are feeling.

  10. I think that this book is a good example of a contemporary young adult novel because it talks a lot about coping and dealing with things that have happened in the past. For example, Alicia went through a really traumatic event with the stalker and with the killing of Gabriel. The book is revolved around how Alicia does not talk, and that is how she is dealing with her past. A lot like today, many people are going through things that not everyone knows and they all cope with it in different way. Gabriel had no clue that Alicia knew that he was the stalker in the beginning of the book. And that relates to today because people hide their feelings and what they know just like Alicia did.

  11. What makes silent patient a good example of a young adult novel is the topics of mental health and childhood traumas that are shown to affect the characters in their later life. Theo is our main character in the book, he grew up in a childhood where things were not good for him and left him with the feeling everything, he got he was very possessive of. So, when he finds out his wife is cheating, he didn't just let it go, break up, move on because he wanted to keep her and that made him do terrible things. Showing how childhood can damage your mental health.

  12. What makes this novel a good example of a contemporary young adult novel is the talk of mental health and the childhood of the characters. Alicia's childhood was very traumatic and probably was the main cause of her mental problems, but I feel like some young adults could be able to relate to some of the trauma she faced as a child. I also feel that some adults might be able to relate to the mental health aspect of it, with mental health being such a big concern today.

  13. I think what makes this book a good example of contemporary young adult literature is that it talks about mental health. Theo and Alicia have struggled with mental health problems and both tried to get help. I think many young adults can relate to this and many people struggle with mental health today. I also think their childhood's can make it young adult because Alicia and Theo both had a tough childhood probably leading to some of their mental health problems they faced when they were older.

  14. I think the psychology aspect of this novel was the most contemporary young adult element about it, as well as the diary entries. It also had a creative concept which is something we value in contemporary stories

  15. I feel that it is a good representation on a young adult book. I personally don't read much mystery so i am not used to young adult mystery but this was a very good book and I feel that its view of story really made it a young adult book.
