The Last Cuentista 1

What makes this novel a "good" example of a contemporary young adult novel?  How does it represent contemporary literature of today?

Comments

  1. The main character is a teenager. Even though no teenager today has had to live on a ship and make their way onto a new planet, they can still relate by feeling like they have to go through something alone and just powering through a hard task. Or not knowing who you really are and everyone terating you weird if youre different.

  2. It can resonate with teens of today. It's set in the far future, but the main character is a teen with teen issues. She misses her family and doesn't want to leave the only place she knew as home. She wants to grow up how she wants and learn what she wants without her parents telling her that she needs to learn something she has no interest in.

  3. there is a teenage girl that tries to fight her battles by herself and still gets to be what she's always wanted to be (a storyteller) on top of that she finds out that she can always make the best of what she has

  4. The main character Petra is a teenager. Although she is a teenager she does not necessarily go through the same problems as a regular teenager. She is stuck on a ship which teens are not. But she also has to concur many obstacles to get to her end goal which teens do have to do that.

  5. The last Cuentista is a good young adult literature book because Petra is a teen who overcomes a lot of struggles on her time on the ship. The book is set in the future so the setting of the book was a lot different to our world, but some of the struggles she had can happen in real life to like loosing her family. This is a good young adult book because it shows how one person can make a difference in another persons life and it also shows Petra growing into someone that helps other people.

  6. This book is circled around a teenager, and although this teenager is going through changes like going to a new planet, there are still many ways teens today can relate. She is stressed because she is the only person on the ship that remembers Earth, and she is feeling alone. Many teenagers in today's world may feel alone with mental health struggles, and can connect to the main character.

    1. I agree with the changes I never really thought about that because every young adult goes through so many changes that can be very difficult.

  7. The futuristic, dystopian setting makes this book stand out to me as contemporary. I also think the themes of leaving behind an old life, developing independence, and finding your voice denote this book as a good fit for the label of young adult. I don't think this book was good, but it is a good example of the contemporary young adult genre

    1. I agree! I feel like another reason it is considered a young adult is because the main character is a teenager.

  8. Petra who's the main character is a teenager going off to a different planet in the future. I could see the timeline being a part of contemporary, but I wouldn't say the book is very young adult I feel like the book would be a lot better if it wasn't so aimed for a younger audience. Contemporary literature today to me is all about the timeline so I wouldn't necessarily call it contemporary lit book because it wasn't currently happening its based in the future

  9. I think it's a good example of young adult because of Petra's age. She also find out in the books that her parents were "purged", so she has to navigate and live on the ship without her family. Some young adults can relate to this because if they lost a parent or their family they might feel the same way Petra did. They may also have to go through life on their own or with little guidance, which could be hard like it was to Petra. Other then that I don't think much of this book represents contemporary young adult literature because of the timeline and how it is based on the future.

  10. This book is a good example of young adult because Petra is a teenager. Even though this book is set in the future and she lives on a ship, Petra still has feelings. Petra's parents get purged and she learns how to live without her family, which some teenagers have parents who have passed or they just don't see.

  11. This really is not young adult book. There are components of this book that could be considered young adult like Petra how old she is and like how she has to get through this by herself. he talks about her thoughts on the ship a lot which happens to everyone so that could also represent young adult. but no one today is going to go to a new planet for 800 years.

  12. This book is a good example of young adult because Petra is a teenager. It talks about the struggles of how Petra's parents get purged and how she has to live alone on the ship. I feel like some young adults can relate too such as when a family member passes away.

  14. this novel is not a great representation of contemporary young adult novels. The introduction to the world felt sloppy and rushed, as though the author was attempting to push us immediately into the part they wanted to write. As a whole, it's fine, there's just a lot of rough edges that could be polished, and it could've benefitted from some revision before being published.

  15. I think the only part I would consider good representation of contemporary young adult novel would be Petra's story. She is young and lost her family and now has to figure out how to navigate her life without anyone. I feel like some adults today who have lost family or has little guidance who have to kind of figure out life on their own could relate to her. Other than that I feel like this would not be considered a good representation of young adult literature.

  16. It's not relatable to the now aside from people having a common role to fill. No one our age is traveling to another planet or anything like that so I feel it's not really that good of a young adult book for right now.
